Hiking Pico Ruivo: Madeira's Highest Peak Complete Guide
At 1,862 meters, Pico Ruivo is the crown of Madeira. Standing at the summit, you're higher than anything else for hundreds of kilometers in any direction. On clear days, you can see the entire island laid out beneath you, with Porto Santo visible on the horizon.
The Routes
There are three main approaches to the summit, each with different characteristics.
From Achada do Teixeira (Easiest)
Distance: About 3km one way
Time: 45-60 minutes each way
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
This is the most popular route and the one we recommend for first-timers. You start from a mountain trailhead at 1,592m, which means less climbing. The path is well-maintained with stone steps in the steeper sections.
The only challenge is the final push to the summit, which involves some stairs carved into the rock. If you've got reasonable fitness, you'll manage fine.
From Pico do Arieiro (Classic)
Distance: About 12km round trip
Time: 4-5 hours round trip
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
This is the famous traverse that connects Madeira's two highest peaks. It's spectacular, you walk along knife-edge ridges with drops on both sides, through tunnels carved into the rock, past viewpoints that look like something from a fantasy film.
The challenge isn't so much the distance as the terrain. You'll climb up and down significantly, with some exposed sections where vertigo could be an issue. The tunnels are dark and narrow (bring a headlamp).
Start early from Pico do Arieiro to catch the sunrise and beat the clouds that often roll in by midday.
From Encumeadas (Longest)
Distance: About 18km round trip
Time: 6-8 hours round trip
Difficulty: Challenging
This is the least-traveled route, starting from the Encumeadas pass on the central ridge. You'll have the trail largely to yourself, but it's longer and more demanding. Only for experienced hikers.
When to Go
Best Months: April-October
Best Time of Day: Early morning (before clouds form)
The summit is frequently in cloud, especially from late morning onwards. Starting at sunrise gives you the best chance of clear views. Check our Pico do Arieiro webcam before driving up,if the peak is in cloud at 1,818m, Pico Ruivo at 1,862m will be worse.
Winter hiking is possible but not recommended. Snow and ice can make the trails treacherous, and rescue services are limited.
What to Bring
Essential:
Useful:
The Summit
The summit has a small shelter (the Casa de Abrigo) where you can escape the wind, but don't expect facilities. There's no water, no toilets, and definitely no café. Bring everything you need.
The views, when clear, are extraordinary. You can see:
Our Webcam Connection
Our Pico do Arieiro webcam shows conditions at 1,818m. If that camera shows clear skies, you'll likely have good conditions at Pico Ruivo. If it's in cloud, wait for another day, there's no point climbing into white-out conditions.
The webcam is also useful for checking snow conditions in winter. If you see snow on Pico do Arieiro, the trails to Pico Ruivo will be icy.
