About Madeira Webcams

We operate 50+ live HD cameras across Madeira and Porto Santo. I initially set this up because driving 45 minutes from sunny Funchal to Pico do Areeiro (1,818m) just to find thick fog was incredibly frustrating. Now, our 24/7 streams let you check exact conditions at the airport runway (LPMA), specific surf breaks at Paul do Mar, or the natural pools in Porto Moniz before you leave your hotel. The island's microclimates mean it can be pouring rain on the north coast while the south is perfectly sunny. Check the cams first. Honestly, they will save you a wasted drive.

Plane Spotting at Madeira Airport: The Complete Guide

Madeira Airport (LPMA) regularly appears on lists of the world's most challenging airports, and watching planes land here is genuinely thrilling, even for people who don't care about aviation. The runway, extended over the ocean on massive concrete pillars, hosts some of the most dramatic approaches in commercial aviation.

Why Madeira Is Special

The original runway, built in 1964, was just 1,600 meters long. After a TAP Portugal crash in 1977 killed 131 people, authorities extended it to 2,781 meters. The extension couldn't go into the mountain, so engineers built a platform over the ocean supported by 180 pillars, each 50 meters tall.

This engineering creates unique challenges:

  • Crosswinds are common and often severe
  • Wind shear can appear suddenly
  • The approach requires last-minute corrections
  • Go-arounds happen regularly

  • Pilots must complete special training to land here. The sight of an A320 crabbing sideways in a crosswind, then straightening just before touchdown, is something you don't see at normal airports.

    Best Spotting Locations

    The Viewing Terrace (Inside Airport)

The official viewing terrace is free and accessible without a boarding pass. It offers:

  • Clear views of the runway
  • Shelter from wind and rain
  • Café nearby
  • Good for photography with a decent zoom lens

  • The Coastal Road

The road running along the south side of the runway (near the beach) offers ground-level views of aircraft on final approach. You'll see planes passing just 50-100 meters overhead. Park near the roundabout and walk along the wall.

    Santa Cruz Beach

From the black pebble beach near Santa Cruz, you can photograph planes with the mountains as backdrop. The angle shows the distinctive runway-on-pillars structure clearly.

    Our Webcams

We operate several airport webcams that let you watch remotely:

  • Live views of runway operations
  • Different angles including approach paths
  • Useful for checking conditions before heading out

  • What to Watch For

    Airlines:

  • TAP Air Portugal (most common)
  • Transavia
  • EasyJet
  • TUI
  • British Airways
  • Emirates (occasional A380!)

  • Aircraft Types:

  • A320neo and A321neo (most common)
  • Boeing 737 MAX
  • A330 on long-haul routes
  • Occasional widebodies in summer

  • Exciting Moments:

  • Go-arounds: Watch for planes climbing away from the runway, they couldn't complete the landing safely
  • Crosswind landings: The crab-and-kick technique is visible and impressive
  • Winter storms: Operations don't stop easily; the landings get interesting

  • Best Time to Visit

    For Action:

  • Mid-morning and early afternoon see the most arrivals
  • Weekends tend to be busier with charter flights
  • Summer has more total flights

  • For Photography:

  • Morning light is better from the coastal road (front-lit)
  • Afternoon light works better from the viewing terrace
  • Overcast days avoid harsh shadows

  • For Drama:

  • Winter brings stronger winds and more go-arounds
  • Check our webcam before driving out,if it's too windy, planes might divert

  • Practical Information

Viewing Terrace Hours: Generally follows airport operational hours

Parking: Available at the airport (paid) or free along the coastal road

Food: Coffee and snacks available at the airport

Photography: No restrictions from public areas

    Our Webcam Advantage

Before making the 20-minute drive from Funchal, check our airport webcams. You can see:

  • Current weather conditions
  • Whether planes are landing or going around
  • Crowd levels at the spotting areas
  • Real-time activity

  • This saves wasted trips on quiet days or during diversions.
