Best Time to Visit Madeira: An Honest Month-by-Month Breakdown
The standard travel advice says "Madeira is great year-round." That's technically true but completely unhelpful. Whether you're hiking levadas, swimming in natural pools, or photographing landscapes, the month you choose makes a real difference.
I run webcams across the island and watch weather patterns daily. Here's what I've actually observed, not what the tourist brochures claim.
The Quick Answer
Best overall: April-June and September-October. Pleasant weather, manageable crowds, everything open.
Best for hiking: March-May. Waterfalls are full from winter rain, wildflowers are out, temperatures are comfortable.
Best for swimming: July-August. Warmest ocean (22-24°C), calmest seas, longest days.
Best for photography: October-November. Dramatic skies, fewer crowds, good light angles.
Best for budget: November-March (excluding Christmas/New Year). Lower hotel prices, fewer tourists, mild weather.
Month by Month
January
Weather: 17-19°C daytime, occasional rain (especially north coast). Mountains often clouded in. South coast stays mild.
What's happening: New Year's fireworks aftermath (Funchal's display is world-famous). The island is quiet , locals are recovering from holiday season. Hotel prices drop sharply after the 6th.
Should you go? Yes, if you want cheap rates and don't mind shorter days. Funchal stays pleasant. Skip mountain hikes , conditions are unpredictable. Check our webcams before heading to viewpoints.
February
Weather: Similar to January. 17-19°C, rainiest month statistically. But "rainy" on Madeira means 30-minute showers, not all-day drizzle.
What's happening: Carnival arrives in mid-to-late February. Funchal's parade is genuinely impressive , not Rio scale, but authentic and fun. Hotels fill up for Carnival week, so book ahead.
Should you go? Good value outside Carnival week. The almond trees bloom in some areas, which is beautiful but brief. Indoor attractions (wine lodges, markets, museums) are crowd-free.
March
Weather: Starting to warm up. 18-20°C. Rain decreasing. Flowers beginning to appear everywhere.
Should you go? One of the better months. Levada walks are at their best , waterfalls running strong from winter rain, trails aren't crowded. The island is waking up from winter. Hotel prices still reasonable.
April
Weather: 19-21°C. Noticeably warmer. Rain becomes less frequent. Wildflowers at their peak.
What's happening: The Flower Festival (Festa da Flor) usually falls in April or May. Funchal's streets are decorated with flower carpets and floats. It's beautiful and worth timing your visit around if possible.
Should you go? Strongly recommended. This is when Madeira looks its best , green, blooming, warm enough for outdoor activities but not hot. Easter can bring crowds, but nothing unmanageable.
May
Weather: 20-22°C. Very pleasant. Rain is rare on the south coast. Mountains are clearer in the morning.
Should you go? Excellent choice. Peak conditions for hiking, sightseeing, and photography. Tourist numbers are building but haven't peaked. Natural pools start opening. Our webcams show increasingly blue skies.
June
Weather: 22-24°C. Summer begins. Almost no rain on the south coast. North coast still gets occasional showers. Ocean warming up (19-20°C).
What's happening: Atlantic Festival in June brings music and fireworks to Funchal every Saturday night. Local festivals (arraiais) begin in villages across the island.
Should you go? Great month. Long days, warm weather, summer energy. Flights and hotels start rising in price but aren't at peak yet. Natural pools are open and pleasant.
July
Weather: 24-26°C. Peak summer. Dry, sunny, hot in Funchal. Mountains can still get morning cloud. Ocean reaches 21-22°C.
What's happening: Village festivals every weekend. The arraiais (parish festivals) feature food, music, and fireworks. They're authentic community events and worth seeking out.
Should you go? High season begins. Everything is open, weather is reliable, but crowds increase and prices peak. Book accommodation well in advance. Check our webcams at Porto Moniz , if the pools look packed at 10am, go after 4pm instead.
August
Weather: 25-27°C. Hottest month. Very dry. Perfect beach weather. Ocean at its warmest (22-24°C).
What's happening: Assumption Day (August 15) is a major holiday. Monte Festival and more village arraiais. This is when Portuguese mainland tourists arrive , the island feels noticeably busier.
Should you go? The trade-off month. Best swimming conditions but highest crowds and prices. Funchal feels genuinely busy. Mountain hiking is hot , start very early. If you can choose, late August is slightly better as mainland Portuguese return to work.
September
Weather: 24-26°C. Still warm, still dry. Ocean stays warm. Days start shortening but are still long.
What's happening: Madeira Wine Festival in early September. Grape harvest celebrations in Câmara de Lobos and Estreito. Wine lodges have special events.
Should you go? One of the best months. Summer weather continues but crowds thin dramatically after the first week. Prices start dropping. The Wine Festival is worth catching. Sea temperature is still perfect for swimming.
October
Weather: 22-24°C. Warm by European standards. First autumn rains arrive, usually brief. Dramatic cloud formations , photographers love this.
Should you go? Excellent for experienced travelers. Weather is still good, prices are reasonable, crowds are minimal. Some natural pools reduce hours. Levada walks are pleasant , not too hot, waterfalls starting to build. Our webcams show increasingly dramatic skies.
November
Weather: 20-22°C. Rain increases, especially north coast. South coast stays mild. Mountains get foggy more often.
Should you go? Budget-friendly and quiet. The island feels like it belongs to locals again. Some outdoor activities are weather-dependent , check webcams before driving to viewpoints. Indoor attractions (wine lodges, Mercado dos Lavradores) are uncrowded.
December
Weather: 18-20°C. Cool but mild. Rain is common but not constant. Festive atmosphere building.
What's happening: Christmas decorations go up in early December. Funchal's lights display is spectacular , seriously good for a city this size. New Year's Eve fireworks are world-famous and draw big crowds (Guinness World Record for largest fireworks display).
Should you go? Two modes: early December is quiet and affordable. Late December through New Year is expensive and packed. If you come for NYE, book 6+ months ahead and prepare for inflated prices everywhere.
What the Weather Apps Get Wrong
Standard weather apps show one forecast for "Madeira." That's useless. The island has distinct microclimates:
This is exactly why our webcam network exists. Before driving 45 minutes to a viewpoint, check the camera. It takes 10 seconds and saves wasted trips.
My Personal Picks
If money and crowds don't matter: Late May or early June. Perfect conditions for everything.
If you want value: Late October or early November. Still warm, dramatically cheaper, quiet.
If you're a photographer: October. The light, the clouds, the contrast , it's all better than summer's harsh sun.
If you're hiking: April. Waterfalls are incredible, wildflowers are everywhere, temperatures are ideal.
The honest truth is there's no bad time to visit Madeira. Even January, with its rain and shorter days, has plenty to offer. The question isn't "when should I go?" but "what do I want to do?" Match the month to your priorities.
